Why Lab Grown Diamonds Will Last Forever

As advertisers have never failed to remind us over decades, ‘a diamond is forever.’ In fact, this is probably the most famous ad slogan of all time, and was even honored as the slogan of the century in 1999. But lately, this promise has been up for debate. As synthetic stones become more common, a lot of people have continued to worry that only diamonds pulled from the ground at great expense are really the gift that will last forever. Fortunately, there’s good news for supporters of the synthetic diamond. Lab-grown stones really do last forever, just the same as mined stones - and here’s why.

Lab diamonds are as tough as natural diamonds

One of the main reasons natural diamond gets the ‘forever’ tag is because it’s practically impossible to damage a diamond; and this is true for lab-grown diamonds too. Lab-grown diamonds have the same chemical properties as earth-mined diamonds, which means they’re just as hard as their natural counterparts. Like mined diamonds, lab diamonds also rank at 10 on the Mohs scale, which is a measure of the scratch resistance of a material. So, lab diamonds can take the same amount of daily wear as natural diamonds, meaning they’re just as suitable to be used for the traditional engagement ring.

They are chemically identical to natural diamonds

Not only are lab diamonds as durable as natural stones, but they’re also chemically, optically, thermally, and visually identical to earth-mined diamonds. The only difference is that they weren’t pulled out of the ground. That means that you could replace a natural diamond for a synthetic one in every story you’ve heard about natural diamonds withstanding calamities like fires, collapses, and loss, and you would get the same outcome. Lab diamonds really do last forever, and there’s nothing that will dull the shine or interfere with the brilliance of synthetic diamonds. It’s not for nothing that they say it’s impossible to tell the difference between a natural diamond and a man-made one.

Lab diamonds give you a neat legacy to pass on

The whole point of having a diamond last for practically ever is to have a legacy you can pass on. But with so many natural stones, the origins are murky and untraceable. This is especially true if an originally mined diamond has been cut and distributed for sale. With lab diamonds, however, you can safely pass on the details of the birth of your precious stones for generations to come. What’s even better is that the legacy you pass on will be vegan and environmentally friendly. Lab diamonds are made using processes that are devoid of conflict, human rights violations, child labor, and environmental disruption – unlike many mined stones.

Lab-grown diamonds are also actually superior to mined diamonds in many ways. They are more affordable (some being priced at up to 40% less than mined stones); and lab-grown diamonds are made in a way that ensures they carry no impurities, and are cut to precision. In fact, a substantial majority of lab diamonds are rated at the highest purity levels. To put things into perspective, only about 2 percent of natural diamonds enjoy the same level of purity.
